International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

In 2022, the United Nations Mine Action Service will promote the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action with the theme “Safe Ground and safe Steps and a safe Home”.

The campaign will focus on the accomplishments of the community working on mines that began with the activities in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL which was established in 1992, and was awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1997.

International Day for Mine Awareness 2022 theme – Safe Ground, Safe Steps, Safe Home

“Safe Ground” is the name given to the worldwide program “turning minefields into fields for play” that was initiated by Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2019, and the idea of clearing the earth of landmines as well as other explosive hazards in order to make it suitable for development.

“Safe Steps” highlights the anxiety that many people feel when they travel around without being aware of the possibility of releasing an explosive that can injure or end their lives at any time. “Safe Steps” also describes the steps that miners follow when they approach areas that are contaminated and includes the application of cutting-edge techniques to safely remove explosive dangers.

“Safe home” is all about restoring the individual security as well as communities in post-conflict situations. There is no better place than home, and it can be difficult to feel comfortable without security and security.

On the 8th of December, 2005 on the 8th of December 2005, the General Assembly declared that the 4th April of every year will be celebrated in the year as International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

The resolution called for the continued initiatives from States, with the assistance of the United Nations and relevant organizations in promoting the creation and growth of national mine-action capabilities in the countries where mines or explosive remnants from war pose an imminent threat to the health, safety and safety of civilians, or hinder economic and social growth at both the local and national and local levels.

Based on its inter-agency guidelines The United Nations Inter-Agency Coordination Group on Mine Action (IACG-MA) is comprised of 12 departments of agencies, fund and programs, along with observer organizations, like The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research and the World Bank continue to ensure the system’s coherence across all mining action pillars and actions.

In the year 2018 UNMAS organized, coordinated and led the creation of the United Nations Mine Action Strategy 2019-2023. The two most significant features of the Strategy are that it provides an accountability structure of all members of the United Nations system and introduces a Theory of Change to guide that United Nations engagement in mine action.
