- Before starting Sakat Chauth fast, first of all take bath in the morning and install Lord Ganesha for worship.
- Fold your hands in front of Lord Ganesha and take a pledge to worship and fast and then offer him water, Akshat, Durva grass, laddus, paan, incense etc.
- Take Akshat and flowers and pray to Ganesha to fulfill your wishes.
- After worshiping Ganesh, offer Arghya to the moon with honey, sandalwood, roli mixed milk and after worship, accept laddus as prasad.
- At the end, pray Lord Ganesha by chanting the beej mantra (Om Gan Ganpataye Namah).

एक समय की बात है, माता पार्वती एक बार स्नान के लिए गईं। स्नानघर के बाहर, उन्होंने अपने पुत्र गणेश जी को खड़ा कर दिया और उन्हें रखवाली का आदेश दिया कि जब तक मैं स्नान कर खुद बाहर न आऊं, किसी को भीतर आने की इजाजत मत देना। गणेश जी ने अपनी मां की आज्ञा को मानते हुए बाहर पहरा देने लगे।
उसी समय, भगवान शिव माता पार्वती से मिलने आए, लेकिन गणेश भगवान ने उन्हें दरवाजे पर ही कुछ देर रुकने के लिए कहा। भगवान शिव ने इस बात से बेहद आहत और अपमानित महसूस किया। गुस्से में, उन्होंने गणेश भगवान पर त्रिशूल का वार किया, जिससे उनकी गर्दन दूर जा गिरी।
स्नानघर के बाहर शोरगुल सुनकर, माता पार्वती बाहर आईं और देखा कि गणेश जी की गर्दन कटी हुई है। इस पर वह रोने लगीं और शिवजी से कहा कि गणेश जी के प्राण फिर से वापस कर दें। इसपर शिवजी ने एक हाथी का सिर लेकर गणेश जी को लगा दिया। इस तरह से गणेश भगवान को दूसरा जीवन मिला। तभी से गणेश की हाथी की तरह सूंड होने लगी। इसी कारण से महिलाएं बच्चों की सुरक्षा के लिए माघ माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी को गणेश चतुर्थी का व्रत करने लगीं।
