What happens on dahi handi festival?

This festival is treat like a sport, hence a playground is selected (called maidan) and in the middle of that a handi filled with Dahi, Milk, Dry Fruits is tied at a height of 20 feet above the ground.

The top of ground are is well crafted and decorated with flowers, colorful green leaves, ribbons, tinsel foil. In some areas, a colorful deign is created with the help of long dupatta. In open ground where ceiling is not available, a designs is created with the help of multiple dupattas and this looks awesome.

The whole setup is done in different areas in an open ground all over the India.

This is the initial celebration and thereafter people dance on the ground later they form a human pyramid  with the participants standing on each other’s shoulders and attempting to break  pot filled with curd suspended at a certain height.

The ritual symbolizes Lord Krishna as a child and his mischievous attempt to steal butter from his neighbor’s houses. As per mythological stories, Lord Krishna and his friends used to form human pyramids to reach and break the pots hanging on the roofs of nearby houses. Their goal was to steal the curd and butter and add a mischievous touch to their efforts.
